Tips for your first time Snorkeling Experience

One of the actives you won't want to miss on Desroches is the opportunity to go on a snorkeling excursion.  These are some helpful tips for first timers…

7 Snorkeling Tips:

1.) Take it easy

There is no need to rush anywhere on the island and this is especially true while in the ocean, so go slowly and take all the time you need. Let the gentle sea sooth you and tread water on the surface until you feel ready to dip your head in.

2.) Breathe deeply

Practice breathing with the snorkel in your mouth, while your head is out of the water and continue with slow deep breaths once your mask is on. Take a deep breath in, put the snorkel into your mouth and blow out once your head is underneath the water. Take a few moments to testing your new deep breathing technique  in one spot and when you feel ready, start to move around.

3.) Feel out your Flippers

Wearing flippers is a new sensation for you feet.  They may take some time to adjust to but are there to help you swim better. Tread water with them, swim short distances and enjoy the added support of flippers.

4.) Try a  life jacket

Life jackets are an extra support for you. They help you float and you can literally keep still and be kept a float by your jacket. It could feel constrictive initially but as soon as you get used to it, you will feel calm and supported.

5.) Relax

The moment you do, you’ll start to enjoy yourself and have fun! There is so much to see under the sea. It truly is a whole other world and you’ll be amazed at the colors and creatures.

6.) Wear sunscreen

And if possible, put a long t-shirt over your costume. Your back is facing up into the sun and the water reflection increases the burn. Sunscreen is the prefect way to protect your skin and still get a lovely golden tan safely.

7.) Take breaks

Although the swimming is gentle, there is so much visual stimulation that perhaps your mind may need a time out! If you need to take a break, hop onto the boat, or swim back to shore and when you are ready, jump back in. You can enjoy the experience at your own pace. Afterwards, give yourself time   for leisurely lie down in your room.
