Carolin is part of Desroches Island Dream team and is one of the first people you will meet when visiting the island as she handles the guest relations. Look out for her as you land – you’ll see her and the team welcoming you in and they will be there to wave you goodbye when you leave.
Originally from Germany, she has been an islander since November 2012, when she arrived with her boyfriend Sven Scultz (who is a senior chef de partie in the kitchen).
The island is known as an uber romantic paradise getaway and Carolin agrees that life on the island, with her boyfriend, is incredibly romantic. Although they work long hours, they have coordinated off time and are able to enjoy long walks on the beach and ocean swims together.
One of her favorite parts of work is handling special requests from quests – from organizing surprise sunset cruises to private beach dinners to setting up the perfect proposal. But, even though she is surrounded by newly weds on honeymoon and loved up guests, she insists, there are no wedding bells for her just yet!
Because the island is so private, couples are able to feel like they are in an exclusive paradise all to themselves. This suits not only the couples, but also the celebrity guests who frequent ( of course I wasn’t able to squeeze Carolin for any names as all guests are treated as equal and a strict confidentially code is adhered to! ) This does mean that guests are checked to establish that they are not paparazzi as Desroches Island is a paparazzi free zone!
The private nature of Desroches filters through to the staff, so that when they have time off, they also tend to stick to themselves and everyone does their own thing. But if there is a special occasion, like when the Rugby is on TV – the South African staff will invite everyone over, or, when the Filipino staff prepare a tasty soup – everyone gathers for dinner. The diverse mix of cultures on the island means that you are constantly being introduced to new cultural traditions.
Carolin uses her downtime to read books, cycle the runway or just be with herself, enjoying that, unlike in the city, she isn’t readily available to everyone at all times. Not having a cell phone connection really helps her to switch off and connect to a slower pace of life. In fact – she often wishes that there wasn’t even TV or such a good Internet connection on the island! The connection she focuses on is her relationships to people.
To contact Carolin, email her or call the island on +27 21 418 3581 with your own special requests.
