Architect, Lisa Rorich is one of Desroches Island’s interior designers. She designed the interiors for the island’s beach suits.
We chatted to her about how she achieved the understated elegance in each space. Here she shares her top 3 design tips to create a Desroches inspired look and feel in your own home:
1:
Outdoor / Indoor juxtaposition
Create spaces outside that would normally go inside. For example, put a sofa on your deck that you’d usually have inside your lounge or place a bed or day bed on your patio.
2:
Focus on ‘relaxed’ furniture
Choose furniture that allows you to sink into it and relax. Customize your couches with deeper seating cushions that promote lying down rather than sitting up. Incorporate larger cushions that you can rest your head and back on, to comfortably prop you up, instead of a stiff backed chair. Create quiet spaces for a cup of tea, a place to read a magazine or simply, have a nap.
3:
Choose texture over color
Keep your color palate to a neutrals. Instead incorporate a variety of textures: woven fabrics, linens, raw bleached woods, glass, stone etc. Have a variety on contrasting textures. Adding bamboo wall paper adds depth to a room and placing a mosquito net over your bed adds a layer effect of texture over texture.
